I like to work with titles that can be read in many ways. "The title is still open enough that it doesn’t nail you in." John Lurie. Part of the reason I started to use the bear in my art is because that word has so many meanings. I fall in love with ideas that resonate with me, but that can be read in a number of ways. For this image the idea of power comes from many directions. Remember the feeling of riding a bike for the first time? That is power.

Several hundred of the bear head masks have been given out since 2008. When I have an art opening or event I make a limited edition of masks, (each edition has slight variations) number and sign them and they are gifted to friends and visitors. The masks have traveled to China, Germany, England and South Korea. I am gathering photos of people wearing the masks. This project is titled you know who you are. The photos will eventually be included in an exhibit.

This is a branch of the bear head series that I began to create in April 23, 2010. I found a box filled with carte d'visite that someone had given me because they had no idea who the people were. I think they are beautiful on their own but I had the urge to change them and add the bear masks and heads. There were several with interesting markings scratched into them and I added some marks. I have also recreated the effect using printmaking techniques to preserve many of the original cards. I wish the carte d'visite tradition would make a come back! Cardomania would rule over other social networking tools! I am starting a project with this idea in mind. I have created several pieces in the series that are similar to the land is unchanged. In May of 2010 eight of the pieces were in the art exhibit flocked which took place in the studio of artist Nick Howard (Alex Kuno also had work in the show) as part of the NE Minneapolis Art a Whirl events. All of those pieces have been sold but the new work will be in another exhibition coming up in the fall.

I incorporate technology or a hint of the urban setting within these sky project photos. A colleague noticed recently that most of the projects in my art practice are influenced by nature although they wouldn't be categorized as nature art. In part I think this may be a result of growing up in a very rural area until age eleven when my family moved to a city setting. Nature has had a profound influence on me. So much of what I have learned about ecology and the environment has been from episodes of Lassie.

This photo was taken when I was around 8 years old. My mother was feeding the bear nectarines and peaches through the window in the front seat. I am in the seat behind her. Once the nectarines were gone she rolled up the window. The bear made a sound I will never forget. It was so powerful. Then it began shaking the car. My father started the car and we got away unscathed. I remember reading out loud all the signs that said "DO NOT FEED THE BEARS" to my parents as we drove through the park. I was in shock when my father stopped the car and asked my mother to start throwing fruit out of the car window.

MN Original parties it up in Mears Park this Friday!

If you ask us, one of the coolest things to happen in Minnesota this past year was the inception of local arts-focused public television program, MN Original. Each episode focuses on a few Minnesota artists of any and all genres, mediums and career levels, making the title “MN Original” a truly accurate statement. Dancers, painters, sculptors, musicians, photographers, actors, designers — the list goes on and on. If you’ve yet to catch this dynamic and fascinating new program on the MN Channel or TPT Life don’t fret, you can watch each and every episode online on the MN Original website. And we certainly do recommend that you catch up on those missed eps, before this Friday!

To celebrate the successful launch of the series — which began airing in April of this year — the MN Original crew is throwing an all-out bash in Downtown St. Paul’s lovely Mears Park. What does this mean for you? Well, aside from one helluva good time it means free live music, art activities, food and drink and most likely the chance to immortalize yourself on film in some way, shape or form.

You’ll enjoy live music from local artists who have been featured on the show including the sweet, folksy toe-tappin’ tunes of Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps; the hipshakin’ sounds of renowned Latin jazz pianist, Nachito Herrera; the rotating-door jam sessioneers of the Mad Ripple Hootenanny. DJ Scott Stulen (who also just happens to be the director of mnartists.org!) flips wax between band sets and Suicide Commandos front man Chris Osgood (Who just so happens to be a major arts leader around these here parts!) emcees the evening.

Also on the bill is a drawing club with mnartists.org and local artists Calpurnia Peach, Andy Ducett, Doug Padilla, Mary Griep (materials provided), plus musicians and local artists selling their wares in the park, food for sale from Barrio, and remarks from MN Original executive producer, Dianne Steinbach.

MN Original’s Party in the Park happens on Friday, July 23rd in Mears Park in downtown St. Paul bordering 5th St., 6th St., Sibley, and Wacouta. The event is from 5-8pm and is free and open to the public - rain or shine. For more info visit www.mnoriginal.com.

For the "here is better than anywhere" exhibition opening at Rosalux Jan. 9, 2009

Continuing ideas from work developed in 2008, this series offers methods towards but not confirmed resolve for her subjects. The new drawings are a response to the digital video environments placed in near proximity within the gallery space. Digital video projects have been captured through weekly, sometimes daily documentation, from local sources, gathered throughout the last year. The distortion that occurs with personal accounts reviewed through both media to create a narrative. In an analysis of everyday surroundings, the title phrase "here is better than anywhere" is considered through the solutions (both real and imagined) presented in this grouping of art works.

I have been trying to design a website for my art practice for over three years. I still think I need to try to set this up but I finally figured out why this has been so difficult. It is because I have so many new projects, exhibitions and art works that it is impossible to keep up with everything I am working on using just a website. So I am hoping that here I will post something everyday. This will give the reader an idea of what I am up to and also create an archive for myself of all the different ideas, exhibitions, collaborations and projects I am working on.
